Cancer Treatment & Prevention Cat Food
For holistic veterinarians, such as Richard Pitcairn, DVM, PhD, cancer arises because a cat’s weakened immune system was besieged with environmental toxins. In his book, “Dr. Pitcairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats,” Rodale, he says that there seem to be so many different potential causes for cancer, but the individuals who are affected by the disease are typically susceptible.
For prevention as well as treatment, cats need to be kept in good health, which means excellent quality food from quality sources, exercise, fresh air and a stable environment with little stress. Dr. Pitcairn says that under adverse conditions, the stronger cats may be more able to detoxify.
To reduce your cat’s risk for developing cancer, Dr. Pitcairn states that they must have no, reduced or limited exposure to carcinogens such as: cigarette smoke, car fumes, sitting on or too close to the television, use of toxic flea and tick products, drinking water from the street (which can contain car chemicals, hydrocarbons, antifreeze, herbicides, and numerous other chemicals), consuming a large amount of organ meat or meat meal where pesticides and growth hormones can reside) and avoiding artificial additives like preservatives and colors in their foods, among other recommendations.
If the cat has cancer, he strongly recommends a natural fresh diet supplemented with vitamins C, E and A. He also adds yeast and raw fresh sprouts and grasses. Vitamin C is given at a rate of one gram per every 15 pounds, half given in the morning and half in the evening. He is also insistent upon avoiding commercial cat foods and instead feeding homemade diets with organic meat.
Dr. Pitcairn is a proponent of feeding as much raw food as the cat is willing to eat. He also suggests making their drinking water from pure water, spring or distilled and not from tap. To treat illness associated with the drugs given for cancer treatment, he suggests feeding cooked oatmeal with honey and using the homeopathic remedy Nux vomica 6C. He also recommends against giving a cat with cancer any vaccinations. Another item in Dr. Pitcairn’s cancer arsenal is the herb goldenseal, and if used for a long time, supported by extra B vitamin complex.
For holistic veterinarians, prevention of cancer, like any other disease, is key. By feeding your cat a healthy diet that is low in chemical additives and by reducing his exposure to environmental toxins, you will be helping his immune system to stay strong and hopefully keep him from becoming susceptible to developing cancer.
